Do Bugs Feel Pain?
Size: 8.5 x 11"
Illustration
This illustration was inspired by the article "Do Bugs Feel Pain?" by Shayla Love. Which talks about cosmetic and medicine tests done on various types of bugs, and if they can feel it or not. Before I even read the article, my mind immediately thought of bugs pinned to a wall because that looks painful, even though they may not be alive. Another thing my mind went to was the game I played a lot in my childhood “Operation”, a children’s board game where you need to pick out the plastic bits from his body without touching the metal rim surrounding the plastic bits. If you do the man will yell and the alarm will go off. These were the initial ideas I went off.

Process
Do Bugs Feel Pain?
It was difficult to choose what to make the plastic game pieces to represent, but after reading the article, I chose to do a fly swatter, a can of bug spray, a mushroom and an antenna. The main things mentioned in the article were the fly swatter and the bug spray. I chose to do an antenna as a play on words for bug antenna, which was mentioned often in the article, as where the bugs would be tested for pain. Often in the original "Operation" game, the plastic bits would be a play on words, for example, one game piece would be a literal butterfly for butterflies in the stomach or a literal apple for Adam's apple.
